May I introduce my travelling companion, Cuthbert. I know I said I was travelling solo, however I fell in love with the story of the two otters who waited for Saint Cuthbert, the 7th century British monk to come out of the sea after a night spent praying immersed in the freezing water.
As Cuthbert came out of the water at dawn two otters emerged and breathed on his feet to warm them and dried them with their fur. There is a 12th century manuscript in the British Library showing the otters with Cuthbert at Coldingham.
My Cuthbert has his own plog heading so expect to see his responses to our experiences. We are both hoping that we meet some of his kin in the waterways of Ireland or England.
